What is the 7.83 Hz frequency?

The Schumann resonance at 7.83 Hz is an electromagnetic phenomenon in the Earth-ionosphere cavity. Listening research on 7.83 Hz is limited. People use it as a low, grounding tone when they want to feel settled.

Proposed mechanism

Associated with Earth's natural electromagnetic rhythm, may support circadian alignment and promote a sense of grounding and calm

What people listen for

These are the effects people associate with 7.83 Hz. No study has tested them for this frequency, so read them as ideas to explore, not as findings.

Sense of grounding and connection

The science behind 7.83 Hz

Brainwave entrainment is the idea that the brain’s electrical activity can fall into step with a steady rhythm you hear. A related response, the Frequency Following Response (FFR), can be measured with EEG.

For 7.83 Hz, no study has tested the specific effects described on this page. The papers below are background on sound and the brain, not evidence for this frequency.

How to use Schumann Earth Resonance

Suggested session

25-35 minutes daily, optimal timing 2 hours before natural bedtime. Individual experiences may vary

🎧

Use headphones

Over-ear or in-ear, at a low volume. They keep the tone clear without turning it up.

🧘

Find a quiet space

A calm room makes it easier to settle in and notice how you feel.

📅

Be consistent

A short session every day is easier to keep. Notice how you feel and adjust.

Safety information

Listening to frequencies is generally considered safe for most adults. However, certain conditions require caution. Consult a healthcare professional before use if any of the following apply:

  • ⚠If you are pregnant, use an implanted device, or a clinician is already caring for you, talk with them before listening
  • ⚠Stop if you feel dizzy or distressed
  • ⚠This is a wellness tool, not a medical device

This information is for educational purposes only. Freqium is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

Schumann (7.83 Hz) sits at the alpha-theta boundary, a good wind-down tone. Delta (1.5 Hz) matches the rhythm of deep sleep. Use sequentially: Schumann 1h before bed → delta at bedtime.

Schumann (7.83 Hz) and alpha (10 Hz) are both associated with calm awareness. Schumann grounds you; 10 Hz alpha is a gentle, easy-going listen.

The research behind this sound

The Physicist Who Heard the Earth Breathe

Study summaryA 1952 physics paper predicting that the space between the Earth and the ionosphere resonates at low frequencies.

In 1952, physicist Winfried Otto Schumann worked out that the cavity between the Earth's surface and the ionosphere should resonate, like a giant bell, at very low frequencies.

His first estimate was around 10 Hz. Later measurements found the fundamental at about 7.83 Hz, now called the Schumann resonance, driven by lightning around the globe.

The number happens to sit near the boundary of the alpha and theta ranges seen in human EEG. That is a coincidence of ranges, not evidence of an effect on health.

People like 7.83 Hz as a low, grounding listen in the evening, and that is how we offer it.
